Abstract

1,270,360. Heart valves. R. K. RAPP. 4 Nov., 1970 [28 Nov., 1969; 15 Sept., 1970], No. 52384/70. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F2] A prosthetic heart valve has four closure flaps 22 (or 122 pivotable about axes parallel to the sides of a rectangular opening 17 (or 117). The flaps are supported on Y-shaped pins 23 each having their stem secured to the valve housing and their branches received in adjacent corners of two flaps. The apices of the flaps have concavities complimentary to the underside of a central seat 19 (119) with which the apices engage in the closed position. The seat (19) (119), which may be conical, elliptical or spherical, is carried by support wires 21 (120) and, in the case of the wires 21, these are cooperable with grooves 25 in the flaps for final guidance purposes. The flaps can be of sinusoidal form (Fig. 1), or of aerofoil form (Fig. 5) tapering in thickness to the apex and to the sides. In Fig. 1, the valve housing has porous and impervious parts 13, 14 bonded together with or without a metallised interlayer 15, whereas in Fig. 5 a polyethylene terephthalate or p.t.f.e. cloth layer 115 is attached to a roughened surface of the housing to allow the housing to be sutured in place. A similar cloth layer can be used with the Fig. 1 embodiment to allow the housing to be held in place until the tissues grow into the porous outer surface. The housing and flaps are preferably of vitrefied carbon or aluminium oxide, both of which can be porous or impervious; other suitable materials include high chromium stainless steel, titanium, glass-reinforced polyesters, epoxy resins, acrylic resins, polycarbonate resins, formaldehyde polymers and polyamides. The pivot pins, the central seat and the supports for the latter are preferably of Vitallium (T.M.). In use, the blood washes both sides of the flaps and this, together with the profile of the flow passage, minimises stagnation such as might cause blood clotting.
