Abstract
1,270,237. Removing scum from sugar juices. BRAUNSCHWEIGISCHE MASCHINEN BAUANSTALT. Nov.23, 1970 [Dec. 2, 1969], No. 55597/70. Heading C6B. Scum forming in the mash section 3 of a countercurrent cassette masher 1 to which raw beet cossettes are supplied at 2 is withdrawn with a stream of juice 4, which is less than the total raw juice offtake, taken from the top of the mash section, the scum being eliminated in an expander 5 which is heated indirectly by steam 6 and/or by direct injection of steam, and the juice then returning to the mash section through a heater 8 as indicated by the arrow 9. A scum inhibitor may be added from a supply 10. The temperature of the returned juice is raised by 5 degrees to 10C to effect partial sterilization. Arrows 11 indicate an alternative circulation in which the juice passes through the heater 8 before entering the expander.
