Abstract
1,269,334. Determining co-efficients of friction. M. S. RHODES and G. W. THORN. April 2, 1970 [Jan. 5, 1969], No. 52271/68. Heading G1S. A device for measuring co-efficients of friction comprises a mobile structure with two running wheels 7, 8 respectively fixed and rotatable upon a common axle 6, the wheels being of different diameters, means providing a torque to resist relative angular movement of the wheels, and means responsive to the magnitude of the torque which when slippage of the rotatable wheel occurs, gives a measure of the co-efficient of frction between the perphery of the wheel and the surface over which it is moving. As described the torque is provided by two spring-loaded plungers 21 carrying brake pads 20 acting on a brake disc 19 on wheel 8. Axial movement of the rotatable wheel which is in screwthreaded engagement with the axle compresses springs 25 applying increasing braking torque to disc 19. The movement of the plungers is monitored by a potentiometer 31 in series with an ammeter calibrated in units of co-efficient of friction. Alternatively the brake pads are mounted on hydraulic rams; the increasing hydraulic pressure is monitored to indicate co-efficient of friction. Alternatively a torsion spring is anchored to the frame 12 of the device and provided with a means for measuring the torque, in this case the bearing between the rotatable wheel and the axle is plain.
