1,269,253. Alternating copolymers. BRIDGESTONE TIRE K.K. 1 July, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 33296/69. Heading C3P. Multi-component alternating copolymers are prepared by polymerizing (a) a C 4-10 conjugated diene, or an aryl-substituted or unsubstituted ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon, (b) one of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or esters of α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acids and (c) at least one of the above-named monomers, the monomer (c) being different from the monomers (a) and (b) the total mole ratio of donor monomers, i.e. conjugated dienes, aryl-substituted or unsubstituted ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons, to the total mole of acceptor monomers, i.e. acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and esters of α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acids, being 1 : 1, at a temperature of -100‹ to 100‹ C., in the liquid state, in the presence of a catalyst prepared from (A) at least one Group IV or V transition metal compound and (B) an organoaluminium - compound selected from: or two or more aluminium compounds selected from: AlR 2 X, Al 2 R 3 X 3 , AlRX 2 , AlR 3 and AlX 3 wherein R is C 1-20 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or alkaryl and X is F, Cl, Br or I. Examples describe the production of alternating copolymers of butadiene/acrylonitrile with nbutyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, isoprene, isobutylene, styrene or propylene and also of butadiene / methylmethacrylate / styrene, isoprene / methyl methacrylate / styrene and butadiene / acrylonitrile / methyl methacrylate/ isobutylene alternating copolymers.
