Abstract

1,269,104. Laser gyroscope. NIPPON SELFOC CO. Ltd. 5 Nov., 1969 [16 Nov., 1968], No. 54292/69. Heading H4D. [Also in Division H1] A laser gyroscopic device includes a fibre-like laser element 1 of a material having a refractive index which is greatest at the axis and decreases in proportion to the square of the radial distance to the axis, the element being formed into a helical coil; a light power source 2; a semitransparent mirror 4 arranged opposite the ends of the laser element 1 such that light rays emanating from either end surface are directed to the other end surface and means 6 for detecting any frequency difference between the two rays emanating from the two end surfaces and passing through the mirror 4. The element 1 which has a laser active material within the glass or transparent synthetic resin host material acts as a converging light guide and is mounted on a transparent support (not shown) inside a cylindrical reflector 3. The element 1, mirror 4, and detector 6 are mounted on a support (not shown) rotable about the primary axis of the coil. Excitation of the laser element I produces waves travelling both clockwise and anti-clockwise around the coil 1, the mirror 4 completing the resonant path. Any rotation of the support produces a frequency difference between the two waves which is detected by detector 6.
