1,269,038. Benzimidazoles. MERCK & CO. Inc. 9 Feb., 1970 [12 Feb., 1969], No. 6098/70. Heading C2C. Novel D- or meso 1,2 - dibenzimidazolyl ethylene glycols of the general formula where R is a C 1 to C 5 alkyl or alkoxy or an acid addition salt thereof are prepared by reacting a 1,2-diaminobenzene with a D- or meso tartaric acid. Pharmaceutical compositions of compound I with a diluent show antiviral activity and may be administered parenterally, topically or as an oral or nasal spray.
