Moulds; processes. -Hollow concrete &c. blocks A, Fig. 1, are moulded with full faces on all sides and an interior cavity or .cavities, indicated in dotted lines, so determined that the walls are of uniform and predetermined thickness. The blocks are formed by placing a layer of concrete in a mould constituted by a bottom plate C, Fig. 4, and sides D, E held together by bolts J, inserting a sheet-metal liner H, Fig. 5, inserting pins G, Fig. 6, through holes F in the sides D until they touch the liner, filling the space between the liner and mould with concrete, then filling the inside of the liner with loose sand which is pressed or rammed to form a core, removing the liner and finally covering the core with a layer of concrete and applying the top plate of the mould. After setting, the pins G are withdrawn and the block removed from the mould, after which the sand core is extracted through the holes formed by the pins G, such withdrawal being conveniently effected by a sand-blast. In place of the liner H a cardboard or paper bag, stiffened, if necessary, by corrugations and filled with sand to form a core, may be employed, the bag being left in the block. Two or more cores may be used to produce two or more cavities. Reinforcing- material may be introduced into the concrete to strengthen the blocks, and the faces of the blocks may be plain or impressed, e.g. pieces may be arranged in the mould to form grooves or tongues on the sides or ends. or to form a bevel on the edges.
