Avoidance of formation of byproducts by maintaining a uniform reaction temperature by improved supply and withdrawal of heat in a catalytic reactor is achieved in the apparatus shown in which heat carrier passes up tube 9 through reactor portion 7 which is at least partly filled with catalyst, and then passes via openings 12 downwards between the catalyst tubes 3 and tube 9, and leaves via annular channel 14 and outlet 15. Reactants enter at 1, pass through catalyst tubes 3 and leave at 8.
