Abstract

Cylindrical objects are packaged by first securing one or more wires or straps 7, 8 around at least one layer 1 of objects to form a partial package, and then uniting a number of such partial packages by one or more straps 13. The straps 13 may be tied around all the partial packages as shown (also in Fig. 1, not shown); or separate, smaller straps may be provided for each pair of partial packages to unite their adjacent layers (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). A device for packaging, e.g. pipes, comprises a conveyer 16, a platform 17 which receives the pipes one by one to form one or more layers, an apparatus 18 for transferring the layers to a device 19 where the partial and complete packages are made, and a discharge conveyer 20. The conveyer 16 comprises an endless belt or chain (25), (Fig. 6, not shown), to which are engageable a number of catches (21) via a clutch 26 when a pipe is let on to the conveyer 16. Each pipe, transported by a catch 21 lies against a stop 27, and connecting arms (29), (30) fixed on rollers (33), (34) move to transfer the pipe to the platform 17. When a predetermined number of pipes is accumulated on the platform, the apparatus 18 operates to grip the pipes by two rows of gripping arms (56/58), (59/61), (Fig. 9, not shown), provided on the gripping device (43) and transfer the pipes to the device 19 on which pipe-supporting beams 5, 6, recessed or notched at the bottom, are prepositioned. The strap is tied around the first layers 1, 2 to form the first partial package. Subsequent partial packages are formed one above the other and all the partial packages are united by further straps. The whole package is then rotated about an axis (46) and discharged on to the conveyer 20 from where they are removed by a fork truck. Transverse strips 12 may be interposed between adjacent layers. The device is suitable for handling pipes of different lengths and diameters.
