Abstract

1,268,901. Unwinding filamentary material. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 23 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 24676/68. Addition to 1,141,890. Heading D1J. The flyer 1 is a tube having a part 2 coaxial with the axis of the spool 10 and a part 3 that first diverges therefrom and then turns in a smooth curve as at 5 to provide an open-ended tubular part directed towards the surface of the spool, the open-ended tubular part being more flexible than the part 3 of the guide. In Fig. I this is achieved by making the open-ended tubular part in the form of a helical spring 6 or a flexible tube. The flyer is balanced by a further part 11. The flyer 1 may be of graduated flexibility longitudinally, either continuously or in one or more steps, or partly continuously and partly in steps. Alternatively the whole of the flyer 1 can be of flexible material with the parts adjacent the sleeve bearing 7 supported to prevent or reduce flexing. The supporting means can itself be of graduated flexibility. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the straight part 4 is in two pieces, these pieces being interconnected by a substantially rigid arm (31) that extends beyond the rotational axis and carries a balancing weight (32).
