1,268,793. Making dies; milling; planing. IPROFIL TEHNOLEMN TIMISOARA. 30 Aug., 1969, No. 43278/69. Headings B3A, B3K and B3L. [Also in Division C7] A die for impressing scales on slide rules is made by marking the scales on a metal die blank B, Fig. 1, heated to a temperature corresponding to the intended impressing temperature and removing the metal between the marking to leave the markings in relief. A polished rolled brass plate B, which has been heat treated to ensure dimensional stability, is heated to 86‹ C. by an electrical heater 4 insulated from the table 1 of a dividing machine. Markings, visible only by a microscope, are formed on the blank B with a cutter 8, after which the blank B is rough milled between the markings so as to leave them in relief using a milling cutter 15, Fig. 2, controlled by a follower 19 of a pantograph moving over an enlarged auxiliary aluminium pattern A. The milling head 15 is then guided by hand and the blank B milled using a microscope 18 so as to finely mill each rough milled scale division. After chrome plating the die, it may be used for impressing the scales on celluloid at 86‹ C.
