Abstract

1,268,759. Recharging secondary cells. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 12 June, 1969 [1 July, 1968], No. 31262/68. Heading H1B. In a rechargeable cell in which metal is removed from an electrode during discharge and redeposited thereon during recharging, the electrolyte is caused to flow towards the surface of the metallic electrode during charging by bubbling an inert gas over the surface thereof. As shown in Fig. 1 a zinc/air battery has bipolar electrodes 11 supported by a framework including top and bottom members 15, 16. Electrolyte is supplied to the cells 20 by conduit 16 and inlets 17. Conduit 18 supplies air to one side of inlets 17 so that bubbles of air traverse the zinc electrodes 14 during charging. The air bubbles agitate the electrolyte in the cells and cause the electrolyte to flow towards electrodes 14 preventing the formation of a layer deficient in zinc.
