Abstract
1,268,753. Ultra-violet resistant containers. UNITED GLASS Ltd. 15 May, 1969 [20 May, 1968], No. 23911/68. Heading C1M. Colourless glass containers are treated at above their annealing point with an iron organic composition and then annealed, the said iron organic composition being formed by dissolving a ferric salt in an organic solvent and adding acetyl acetone. The salt may be ferric chloride and the solvent an ester, e.g. butyl acetate, a lower (C 1-6 ) alcohol or a ketone. The composition may contain 3-10 wt. per cent of iron. An amber glass resistant to U.V. transmission is formed. Preferably, the composition is sprayed over the glass containers emerging from an annealing lehr at, e.g., 500-650‹ C., the sprays being controlled by a detector which detects the presence of hot glass at the spray point, the glass then being re-annealed.
