Acylsalicylate derivatives of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 1-4 alkyl groups are prepared by reacting a p-N-acylaminophenol or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof with an acylsalicylic acid anhydride in the presence of a basic organic medium, such as pyridine, quinoline or pyridine or quinoline in admixture with an inert reaction medium, for example ethylene dichloride. Acetylsalicylic acid anhydride is made by reacting acetylsalicylic acid with thionyl chloride.
