Abstract

1,268,350. Settling tank with rotary sludge rake. UNION CORP. Ltd. 25 Nov., 1969 [26 Nov., 1968], No. 55991/68. Heading B1D. Hollow tubular sludge rake arms 2 are mounted for rotation about central column 6 in settling tank 1 and are also capable of pivoting about their inner arms 4 to ride over obstructions, and pipes 15a, 18a enable the arms to be variably filled with water or compressed air to vary their buoyancy and thus adjust their normal position relative to the tank floor. In Fig. 2, both pipes are brought back to the central column where are provided couplings for water reservoir 24 and a compressed air supply. In Fig. 1, not shown, pipe (18) extends up from the outer end of arm 2 and is pivoted to prevent it catching on bridge (13) when raised. Pipe (15) is used to supply water to arm 2, which may be emptied by delivering compressed air to pipe (15) or (18) or pumping water from pipe (15) while pipe (18) serves as a vent. Bridge (13) carries sludge inlet pipe (14). In both embodiments, the rake rotation must be stopped to adjust buoyancy, but rotary couplings and valves could obviate this. The arms 2 are pulled round by tie ropes (7) extending forward to radial drive arms (9) and other ropes (12) determine their lowermost positions (Fig. 1). Buoyancy could be adjusted using hollow chambers other than arms 2.
