Abstract
1,268,319. Laminates. THOMAS & BETTS CORP. 4 June, 1970 [12 June, 1969], No. 26988/70. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B3] A laminate comprising a number of generally parallel electrically-conductive filaments or conductors 10 sandwiched between plastics strips 12 is made by feeding the filaments or conductors from roll 5 and guiding them by filament guides to the nip of rollers 7 where they are contacted with the strips 12, the resultant assembly being heated by heater 8 and pressed by rollers 7a. The spacing between the conductors being altered by an apparatus comprising a base 18, cam plates 17 and 35 mounted on a plate 22, an air cylinder 30 for reciprocating the plate 22 on shafts 20, guide fingers 37 each of which has a conductor guide 44 at one end while its opposite end has a pivot pin 41 engaging a slot 43 in the box 18, follower pins 42 engageable with slots 19 in the cam plates and adjustable stop means to limit the travel of the cam plates. To alter the spacing between the conductors 10, a solenoid 56 is activated which frees guide fingers 37 for pivotal movement by raising the cam plate 17 against the action of compression springs 54. The cam plates 17 and 35 are then moved by the cylinder 30 either to the left or right, Fig. 4, to reduce or increase respectively the spacing of the conductors by pivoting the guide fingers 37 about the pins 41 as the pins 42 follow the slots 19. The limit of movement of the cam plates to the left is controlled by the bottoming of the piston of cylinder 30 and movement of the plate 22 relative to jaws 28 by loosening nuts 29 while the movement to the right is limited by belts 70 abutting stops 72. When the desired spacing is achieved the solenoid 56 is released allowing cam plate 17 to hold the guide fingers 37 in the given position.
