Abstract

[Also in Divisions C4 and C5] Metal or refractory surfaces are coated with a composition comprising, by weight, 20-40% siliceous refractory, 5-25% carbonaceous refractory, 3-20% sodium silicate solution (20- 60% solids), 0-6% clay, 0.05-1% polysaccharide gum and 40-60% water (see Divisions C4-5). The coating protects metal ingots other metallic vessels, and refractory blocks' or bricks in ladles, launders and furnaces from attack by molten metal. In Example 1 the composition is tested by projecting molten steel at coated cast iron slabs.
