A process for preparing a cationic starch comprises heating within the range of 70- 110‹C. for a time of 0.5-5 hours a mixture which comprises, on a total solids basis, 0.5- 40% by weight of a polyalkyleneimine or a polyalkylenepolyamine having a molecular weight of at least 50,000 and from 60-99.5% by weight of starch or a starch derivative.
