Abstract

1,268,049. Surgical blood-pumps. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 20 June, 1969 [28 June, 1968], No. 30889/68. Heading ASR. [Also in Division F1] A peristaltic blood-pump that can be implanted in the human body has a flexible duct 1, a rigid outer wall 2 and groups of cells 10, 11, 12 to which a pulsatory pressure is applied by a second pump P, which may also be implanted in the body, expansion and contraction of the cells being sequential due to restrictions 15A, 16A or orifices in flexible walls 12. Alternatively, the duct is surrounded by sponge-like material having interconnected cells connected to a source of pulsating pressure at 14 or by way of solenoid-operated inlet and outlet valves to a compressed-air source, Fig. 4 (not shown). Non-return valves 5, 6 may be provided. Four ducts similar to that shown may be lodged in separate rectangular channels to form individual pump units that are connected in series, Fig. 5 (not shown). The second pump may be of the diaphragm type and actuated by a magnetic field externally of the body or it may be a pump actuated by muscular action due to breathing, this pump being implanted, e.g. adjacent the diaphragm. Alternatively, the cells are pressurized by a flexible reservoir implanted adjacent the skin, which is periodically compressed externally by, e.g. a pulsating pressure vessel or an oscillatory element.
