Abstract

126,782. Wade, H., (Lockwood, L. V.). May 13, 1918. Blowing.-Relates to mechanism for forming screw-threads in bottle-necks applied to a rotary machine in which a series of parison moulds are mounted on an intermittingly moving table, several bottles being in process of manufacture at the same time. The parison moulds are opened and closed by the usual cam mechanism and the blowing is effected in the customary manner. The moulds C each consist of two parts mounted on a vertical pivot carried by the table B and arranged to close on an upstanding part 5 of the mould bottom C' and shaped so as to enclose the end 7 of tongs which form the outer part of the neck. The screw-forming nipple 12 is carried by a spindle D, the lower end of which is threaded at 12a and works in a cross-bar 13<b> carried on pillars 13<a> extending downwards from a plate 13 fixed to the table B. The spindle D causes a pinion D', the vertical movement of which is limited by stops. As the mould approaches the charging station, the pinion D' engages a spur wheel F frictionally connected to a shaft 78 which is driven through bevel gearing G<3> by an electric motor. The spur wheel F, by rotating the spindle D, causes it to rise by the action of the thread 12<a> and the nipple enters the closed mould. After the mould has been charged and the molten metal forced down into the neck part of the mould by compressed air, the table moves forward and the pinion D' engages a spur wheel similar to F, but driven in the reverse direction which causes the nipple to be withdrawn. At the blowing station, air is admitted through a lateral port to the space 11<a> and the preliminary blowing is effected. The mould is automatically opened and the parison is removed in the tongs for finishing in the usual way.
