Abstract

1,267,239. Welding by pressure; removing weld flash. BECKER-PRUNTE G.m.b.H. 2 June, 1969 [1 June, 1968 (2); 10 April, 1969], No. 27898/69. Headings B3L and B3R. A chain welding machine of the type in which the chain passes twice through the machine to complete the welding of the horizontal and vertical links has a welding station and a subsequent flash removal station at which the still red-hot flash can be removed from a welded link simultaneously with the flash-butt welding of a succeedinglink, the clamping arrangement at the two stations being such that play is left between the two clamped links. A movable clamping jaw 9 is lowered to hold a link 8 from which flash is to be removed on to a fixed jaw 16 and an extension 11 on the jaw 9 simultaneously forces down the next horizontal link on to jaws 13b, 14b of two electrodes 13, 14 forming part of a welding bed. The movable electrode jaw 14a may be lowered on to the link to grip it at this stage and a horizontally movable member 115 (Fig. 9 III) may be used to displace the link to be welded to one side of the path of the chain; the movable press jaw 122 (shown as 15 in Fig. 2) moves the link 102a forwardly against a fixed press jaw 121 thereby creating a small degree of play b between the two clamped links. The movable electrode parts are lowered on to the limb of the link to be welded adjacent to the weld point 120 and flash butt welding performed by advance and release of pressure on the movable press jaw 122. The adjacent electrode may be mounted on a common slide with the movable press jaw. In an alternative arrangement the link to be welded is gripped by a pincer-shaped tool for insertion in the welding bed. Drive means for advancing the chain either cyclically or continuously are described (Figs. 18-21, not shown); these consist essentially of two inclined discs the gap between which is variable under spring loading, the region of minimum distance between the discs serving to grip the limbs of vertically disposed links sufficiently to drive the chain frictionally. The drive may include a oneway clutch device to provide a step by step feed of the chain. Weld flash 105 (Fig. 16) is removed by the stroke of two shaped tools 140, 141 the cutting edges of which mutually overlap. Hydraulic means may be used to move the flash removal tools as also the clamping jaws. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,199,427.
