Abstract
1,267,115. Safety guards. HOPKINS & BUCKLAND Ltd. 16 Oct., 1970 [28 Oct., 1969], No. 52650/69. Heading E1J. In a safety rail, guard or barrier of the kind held in position between two parallel supports, e.g. the walls of a staircase or passage, by a mechanism comprising two aligned tubular members a and a<SP>1</SP> one of which, viz a<SP>1</SP> is affixed to the safety rail &c and the other member is free to move longitudinally relative to the safety rail &c when an arcuate slot in a handle pivoted to one of the members engages a pin on the other member, the handle D<SP>1</SP> is pivoted on a pin a<SP>3</SP> passing through the free member a and through an elongate slot d in the tube D which is affixed to the safety rail &c by a pin a<SP>4</SP> which passes through the arcuate slot a<SP>1</SP> in the handle D<SP>1</SP> and through the fixed member a<SP>1</SP> and the tube D, so that when the handle D<SP>1</SP> is brought down from the inclined position shown into contact with the safety rail the pin a<SP>4</SP> moves to the other end of slot d<SP>1</SP> and the pin a<SP>3</SP> in the slot d together with the free member a moves to the left outwards to lock the safety rail &c between the parallel supports. The effective length of the safety rail may be varied by extension rods in the ends of the members with buffers to engage the supports and with a pawl in each member to engage a series of holes on the members.
