A chain comprises a plurality of external plates 1, internal plates 2 and intermediate plates 3, the external plates 1 being connected in pairs by cylindrical members 4 and the internal plates 2 being connected in pairs by members 5 having concave surfaces which engage the members 4. The plates 2 have holes 6 through which the members 4 pass loosely. The members 4 may pass loosely or with some tension through holes made in the intermediate plates 3. The supporting member 5 may be made from a polymeric material in order to reduce the weight of the chain and reduce the noise of the chain in operation.
