Doors, lids, and covers.-A device for securing lids or covers to flanged cylinders, jars, &c. comprises a number of clips adapted to straddle the edges of the flanges and a flexible contractible band encircling the clips and adapted when drawn up to apply an equally distributed radial pressure to the clips. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the clips 1 are formed in a continuous flexible band 3 by stamping out suitably shaped openings 2 to fit over the flanges or abutting members, the band being bent to wavy form and provided with lugs to embrace the contractible encircling band 4. A pivoted lever 7 is employed to draw up the band 4, and a washer may be interposed between the flanges &c. In a second construction, Figs. 4 and 6, a number of separate clips 14, maintained in spaced relation by small springs 19 and formed with V-shaped openings 15 to straddle the bevelled flanges or abutting members, is employed, each clip being provided with projections 24 to retain the contractible band 4, which may be tightened by a screw-and-nut device 26, 27, 28. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the bevelled flanges 17 are of uniform thickness and a tapering washer 11 having a reinforcing wire 31 is interposed between the flanges, and the band 4 is formed with serrated' teeth 33 adapted to be turned down over the edges of the clips 14. The same Figure also shows the method of applying a closure 30 to the end of a pipe or cylinder. The washer 11 may be shaped with a projection 11<a>, Fig. 10, extending beyond the flanges and adapted to be compressed on the outer surface of the flanges by the clips 14. In attaching a lid or cover 41 with a plane outer surface, Fig. 18, to a cylinder or household article such as a jar 40, one face 44 only of the clips 14 need be bevelled, and the contractible band may take the form of a wire, cord or string located in grooves 46 in the clips. The ends of the band 4 may be fastened together by forming them with V-shaped slots 35 and projecting teeth 36, the teeth 36 on one end being passed through the slots on the other end and then turned backwards and hammered down.
