Abstract

1,266,518. Laminates. HEATSHIELD RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT PTY. Ltd 16 June, 1969 [17 June, 1968; 16 July, 1968], No. 30448/69. Heading B5N. A laminated heat insulating article is produced by conveying a section or continuous sheet of material such as flat or corrugated galvanized steel or asbestos cement horizontally, its surface to be positioned remote from a heat source uppermost, delivering continuously to the moving surface superimposed laminations of aluminium foil and clear or transparent polyethylene film and applying heat and pressure to the assembly of the section, foil and interposed film by conveying it under a weighted flexible sheet and past heating means. The article is used as a roofing material, wall cladding or ducting or in the form of tiles. Apparatus for producing the laminated article comprises a frame 10, 11, 12 and 40, rollers 13 and 41 and bars 42 for supporting a continuous sheet 14 of, e.g. corrugated steel, a roll 17 of polyethylene bearing upon a counter-rotating roll 18 of Al foil to provide via pinch rollers 22 and a spring- loaded tensioning roller 28 superimposed film and foil for laminating with the steel sheet at forming rollers 33, a series of gas burners 43 providing a profiled flame for uniform heating of the corrugated assembly, a flexible sheet 49 of glass cloth weighted by gravel 54 for applying pressure to the assembly, pressure rollers 57 and a guillotine (not shown) for cutting the finished sheet into appropriate lengths. When the foil and film are applied to the corrugated sheet, the foil protrudes at one side beyond the edge of the sheet and the film also protrudes but to a lesser extent, these extending sections eventually being cut away by a trimmer 55. At the other side of the sheet a part thereof is left exposed (Fig. 5, not shown). One side of the flexible sheet 49 is engaged by a clamp bar suspended under a longitudinal channel to lift this side of the sheet clear of the laminations in theevent of a stoppage. The roll 17 and upper roller 22 may be frictionally braked by means of weights 26 and the roll 17 may also be provided with an electrically operable brake, in the circuit of which are connected solenoid valves 48 for control of the burners 43. The apparatus may be modified for applying the laminations to corrugated asbestos cement panels by replacing the rollers 13 with an endless belt 60 on which panels may be manually or mechanically placed and replacing the gas burners by downwardly directed electric or gas radiant heaters. The shaped forming and pressure rollers 33 and 57 are replaced by plain rollers if flat panels are to be insulated.
