Abstract

1,265,434. Making bearing cages; broaching. TEXTRON Inc. 10 March, 1970, No. 11392/70. Headings B3A and B3L. [Also in Division F2] The pockets 26 of a roller cage are formed in a cylindrical blank 43 having a radially projecting rib 44, by firstly drilling cylindrical bores 34, 35 radially into the blank to an extent short of the limit 29 of the rib, and secondly broaching the drilled holes with a rectangular broach to provide roller contacting faces 40, 42. A twostepped broach which also squares the faces 29 is used (Fig. 15). The dimensions of the broach are such that portions of the cylindrical bores are left to form lubricating passages 34, 35. The cage is used in conjunction with an outer race ring 12 having a U-shaped-section, so that the assembly of rollers, cage, and race ring is unit-handling; the flanges 28, 28<SP>1</SP> of the cage ride on the flanges of the race ring. In an alternative embodiment, the inner race ring has the U-shaped section, and the structure of the cage-is radially reversed.
