Abstract

1,265,390. Drying particulate or fibrous material. K. ZENKNER. 1 Dec., 1969 [4 Dec., 1968], No. 58574/69. Heading F4G. A drier, e.g. for particulate or fibrous material, comprises a fresh air cross flow fan having a cylindrical impeller 9 and a combustion chamber 27b for supplying hot gases to the tubes of a heat exchanger 27c in the path of the air. The impeller, combustion chamber and heat exchanger being contained in a casing with impeller bearing and drive units located externally, the impeller having a curved deflector plate 10 and a turbulence flap 11. The flap may be wedge-shaped and co-operates with a baffle plate 14 to separate pressure and suction sides of the impeller whilst allowing a current of air to flow from the pressure side between impeller and flap. The fan may be upstream or downstream of the combustion chamber and heat exchanger. Air inlet channel 29a, channel 29b and outlet channel 29c may be mutually at right angles enclosing a drying zone 28 supplied with heated air via jets 30, guide plates 37a, 37b, 39 aiding the deflection of air round the right angles. Alternatively the channels may be disposed in a straight line, Fig. 4 (not shown), or substantially at 180 degrees, Fig. 10a (not shown), passages between jets (41) allowing the air blown on to the material to flow back into the outlet channels. The outlet channel may have two limbs (33a), (33b), Fig. 6 (not shown), with opposing jets (35) blowing heated air on to material on a belt 34. Spiral elements (45), Fig. 1 (not shown), may be provided in the heat exchanger tubes to regulate the flow of hot gas. Several driers may be combined in a longitudinal or transverse direction to dry material e.g. ceramic parts on a conveyer belt.
