Abstract

1,265,309. Welding by fusion. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 14 July, 1969 [9 Aug., 1968], No. 38064/68. Heading B3R. In electron beam welding an electrical contact 11, e.g. of a road vehicle distributer contact breaker, to a support 12, wherein the contact melting point is higher than that of the support, the beam melts a portion of the support and heats an adjacent area of the contact to a temperature between the contact and support melting points, so that the melted support part flows to said area of the contact and, on cooling, forms the required joint between the contact and the support. As shown, wherein the contact 11 and support 12 are of tungsten and spring steel respectively, the contact is supported in facial contact with the support so as to be exposed through a circular hole 13 in the support. The electron beam is moved in a circular path parallel to the hole edge and is such that its axis 15 impinges on the contact adjacent the hole edge and that a divergent part thereof impinges on the support. The simultaneous melting of the support and heating of the contact could, alternatively, be effected by suitably controlling beam density and/or traverse path, e.g. the beam focus could be on or below the contact and the beam movement sinusoidal, or the electron accelerating voltage could be suitably controlled.
