Abstract

1,265,255. 2,3 - Dihydro - 2,2 - dimethyl - 7- benzofuranyl methyl carbamate. FMC CORP. 30 July, 1970 [30 July, 1969], No. 36858/70. Heading C2C. 2,3 - Dihydro - 2,2 - dimethyl - 7 - benzofuranyl methyl carbamate is prepared by reacting 2,3 - dihydro - 7 - hydroxy - 2,2 - dimethylbenzofuran and methyl isocyanate in proportions from roughly stoichiometric to a slight excess of methyl isocyanate, in an intensive mixing zone in the presence of an organic diluent which is liquid under ambient conditions and has a boiling point not above 80‹ C. and a heat of vaporization of at least 40 calories/gm.; initiating the reaction by means of a catalyst to produce an exotherm; controlling the exotherm by volatilizing the diluent and unreacted methyl isocyanate, condensing the volatile materials and returning them to the reaction zone until the reactions are substantially complete ; and thereafter continuing the volatilization of the inert liquid by the sensible heat in the reaction mixture to produce the required compound in dry powdered form. The preferred catalyst is triethylamine and suitable diluents are, for example, benzene, cyclohexane, methylcyclopentane, pentane, hexane, methylene dichloride, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and ethyl isobutyl ether.
