Abstract

1,265,253. Printers. BURROUGHS CORP. 13 July, 1970 [24 July, 1969], No. 33872/70. Heading G4H. In a line printer marks referencing printing lines of each page of continuous stationery are preprinted down one edge of each page or are printed on a format control loop. In either case, pulses generated by photo-electrically scanning the marks as the paper moves are counted and the paper stopped when the count equals a binary number transmitted from a computer to select the print line. In the arrangement of Fig. 5, line marks represented by doubledashes 43, 45 either side of the paper sprocket holes, or single dashes on one side only, are scanned by two photo-cells in a scanner 41 which are connected to a logic arrangement 87, 93, 97 and 105 to generate a pulse on line 117 for each double-dash to clock on counter 113. The counter is reset by the unique end of page single mark in the left-hand column via line 115. Binary numbers from a computer 39 are stored in register 47. Decoder 109 decodes numbers from 1 to 12 each of which identifies a particular one of the double-dash marks. Upon coincidence with the counter and decoder a comparator 121 signals a brake/clutch mechanism 25 to stop the paper advancing. Binary numbers 13, 14 and 15 decoded in decoders 125, 133 and 139 respectively, advance the paper by one line, two lines or to the next double-dash mark. The receipt of a fresh number in register 47 starts the paper moving again. The sensing head, shown in Fig. 3, consists of two infra-red radiation sources and two phototransistors mounted in a block 65 which is supported in a frame 63 attached to a support 41. The block 65 is adjustable selective to the marks by screw 69 and the support 41 swings out to admit fresh stationery. If a format control tape is used (Fig. 6, not shown) it is laid on top of the print paper in registration with the sprocket wheel and loops over the support 41.
