Abstract
1,265,074. Laminated and embossed films. HAGINO KIKO CO. Ltd., and MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 7 June, 1969, No. 28921/69. Headings B5B and B5N. A process for the production of laminated thermoplastic films having a multiplicity of independent air cells (Figs. 10 and 11, not shown) comprises the steps of extruding obliquely in a downwards direction two sheets of molten thermoplastic film simultaneously and continuously from a die mounted on an extruder, engaging one of said molten films with an endless moulding belt formed with a multiplicity of holes, forming a multiplicity of projections by sucking portions of said film into the holes in the belt and pressing and bonding the other molten thermoplastic film to the flat surface of the first film where the projections have not been formed. Apparatus suitable for the process of the invention (Fig. 2) comprises an extruder 1 with a die 6 containing two parallel extrusion slits 7 and 8. Films are extruded simultaneously from the two slits and contact an endless belt 12, which contains a multiplicity of perforations and is driven round suction roller 9 by mounting and cooling roller 11, where portions of the film 16 (Fig. 3) extruded from the slit 7 are sucked into the holes in the belt and momentarily afterwards the film 17, extruded from slit 8, is pressed against the flat surface of the embossed film 16 to form a laminate 71. The holding and cooling roller 10 serves to urge the two films together, the embossed laminated film passing between it and the belt 12, round the roller 10 and along the apparatus to the take-up roller 58. The rotatably mounted suction roller 9 comprises a perforated cylindrical drum surrounded by a wire gauze 26 and containing a suction box 19 of U-shaped cross-section connected along its length to a hollow shaft 18 which, in turn, is connected to a vacuum source via suction pipe 36. In other embodiments of the apparatus (Figs. 12 and 13, not shown) the two films are urged together by a jet of compressed gas in place of the roller 10 and cooling liquid is passed between molten film 16 and the endless moving belt 12. An example relates to the production of a laminated embossed sheet of polyethylene.
