Citric acid is prepared by aerobically cultivating a citric acid accumulating strain of Candida in an aqueous nutrient medium in the presence of from 0À5-1À5 gms./litre of lead oxide, lead oxychloride or a lead salt. Lead salts specified are lead chloride, bromide, nitrate, thiocyanate, thiosulphate, formate, propionate or butyrate. Many Candida strains are specified.
