A battery charging system for a vehicle of the type wherein an alternator 11 supplies the battery 16 through a main rectifier 12 and supplies its field winding 28 through auxiliary rectifiers 17, is characterized by the interposition of the ignition switch 15 between members 17, 28 and by the provision of a transistor voltage regulator, whose transistors 21 and 25, 27 oscillate in an ON/OFF manner to intermittently energize the winding 28 and whose voltage sensing and comparison circuit 18, 19, 21, 22, 24 is connected across the battery 16 as shown. In addition to providing accurate sensing of the battery voltage, this connection ensures that the circuit fails safe if the connection between members 16, 18 is broken, such breakage removing the base current from transistor 25 to turn off transistors 25, 27. ON/OFF oscillation of the regulator transistors is provided by the positive feedback circuit 31, 32 and temperature compensation is obtained by choosing the resistor 22 in relation to the base-emitter characteristics of the transistor 21. The negative feedback resistor 30 may be omitted in some applications of the regulator.
