[Also in Division F2] A rotatable support, e.g. for a grinding-wheel 34, comprises a non-rotatable member 36 and a rotatable member 33, one of the members having cut-outs 70, Fig. 4, defining fluid pressure pads through which fluid flows at constant pressure from a source 73, returning through a passage 86 in the non-rotatable member 36, and means 66 being provided for driving the rotatable member 33. Fluid is fed to the cut-outs 70, which provide a precision fluid bearing, through a conduit 76 and an annular chamber (82), Fig. 5 (not shown), leading to inlet passages 83 with calibrated orifices 84, return to the passage 86 being through radial passages 85. Annularly disposed recesses 131 similarly connected to the fluid source 73 form axial thrust bearings. The driving means 66 comprises an hydraulic motor, Fig. 3, including spur gears 105, rotatable by hydraulic pressure, on shafts 106, and meshing with a ring gear 111 fixed to the rotatable member 33. The driving fluid may be supplied from the source 73 by an independent pump 114 through an inlet 120; a common pump (150M), Fig. 10 (not shown), may supply both the motor 66 and the pressure pads, or entirely independent fluid supplies may be provided. In a modification, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), only three spur gears (105A) are provided and the cut-out profiles are altered.
