Abstract

126,332. Brown, P., and Bostock, F. J. Dec. 20, 1916. Gear-cutting.-A gear-cutting machine of the rack-cutter type for cutting helical, double-helical, and spur or like gears comprises two independent cutter slides 2, on an adjustable head stock 1, each slide carrying a tool-holder 4, 5 provided with rack-cutters 4<a>, 5<a>, so that the indexing for the cutting of one-half of the wheel can take place independently of, or in unison with, that of the other half, without stopping the work. Preferably each tool-holder has its own driving- gear 6, 7, but both may be operated by a centrally disposed driving-gear to which the operating spindles 8 of the tool-holders are connected by spindles and bevel gears. The tool-holder has a slow feed during the cutting stroke and a quick return, these movements being preferably effected by the differential gear shown in Fig. 3. One member 9 of the differential is loosely mounted on the spindle S, which engages a nut 8<b> on the tool-holder. The wheel 9 carries a worm-wheel 10 gearing with a worm 11 on a shaft 12 driven from the main drive. A second member 13 of the differential is fast on a spindle 14 geared to the usual change or holding wheels 15 under the control of the dividing wheel. The other members 16 of the differential are mounted on pins 17<a> on a boss 17 fixed to the spindle 8, which carries a gear-wheel 18 engaging a gear-wheel 19 on a shaft 20 driven through gear-wheels by a shaft 23. The wheel 19 is loose on the shaft 20, but is adapted to be driven by it bv a slip drive when no opposing pressure is placed theron. During the cutting stroke, the wheel 13 is stationary and the spindle 8 is rotated slowly by the gearing 10, 11, and during the return stroke, the wheel 13 is free and the drive of the spindle 8 is effected by the gearing 18, 19 and also by the gearing 10, 11.
