Abstract
1,262,897. Glow discharge apparatus. ANCIENS ETABS AUBERT & DUVAL A. R. J. DUVAL SUCCESSEURS. 12 Jan., 1970 [15 Jan., 1969], No. 1425/70. Heading H5H. [Also in Division C7] Iron or steel parts A are nitrided by enclosing them in a chamber 1 provided with nitrogen containing gas under reduced pressure, negatively polarizing the parts to cause a cathode glow discharge, and simultaneously heating the parts A by a heat source 2 independent of the source of polarizing potential. As shown, a support 3 for parts A is electrically connected to earthed housing 1, is provided with passages for circulation of ionized gas, and is arranged inside oven 2. A vacuum pump 11 is connected to one end of housing 1 and a source of nitrogen containing gas is connected at 12 to the other end. Cooled electrodes 6, 7 mounted in insulators 4a, 5a are connected to secondary winding 18 of transformer 19 by chokes 16, 17. The secondary is earthed at its centre 20. In operation, the electrodes 6, 7 act during successive half cycles as anodes so that the arrangement is self rectifying. Chokes 16, 17 prevent arcing. Various, variable voltage A.C. supplies are disclosed. Heat source 2 may be a fuel oven, electric oven, high frequency inductor or a resistance heater.
