Abstract

1,262,802. Polyamide compositions; graft polyamides; polyolefin compositions. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 19 Feb., 1970 [20 Feb., 1969], No. 7978/70. Headings C3P and C3R. Compositions suitable for moulding are prepared by polymerizing an aminocarboxylic acid having at least 6 carbon atoms are an amide, lactam or ester thereof at 100-300‹ C. in the presence of an addition polymer mixture including 2-50 weight per cent of a copolymer in which 1-20% of the recurring units contain carboxylic acid groups, the aminoacid or derivative thereof comprising 60-95 weight per cent of the reaction mixture. The aminoacid derivative may be epsilon-caprolactam. The addition polymer mixture may comprise a homopolymer of formula and a copolymer having recurring units of formula wherein R 1-4 are H, CH 3 , C 2 H 5 or halogen, R 5 is H or CH 3 , and n is an integer such that the molecular weight of the homopolymer may be at least 100,000. The homopolymer may be polythene, polypropylene or polyisobutylene. The copolymer may be derived from ethylene propylene or isobutylene and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or an amide, ester or salt thereof. The composition produced may comprise (a) the polyamide, (b) the addition homopolymer and (c) the addition copolymer grafted with polyamide side-chains. It may be shaped by extrusion or spray-casting. In examples small amounts of epsilon-caproic acid and acetic acid are added to the polymerization mixture. The product is spun into bristles.
