Abstract

1,262,792. Block copolymerization. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. 20 June, 1969 [24 June, 1968], No. 31282/69. Heading C3P. Block copolymers are obtained by reacting two polymer types, each having a molecular weight of 300 to 50,000, and of the formulµ AM 2 and RY 2 where each of A and R are bifunctional polymer radicals, A being dianionic, each M being an alkali metal ion and each Y being a functional group reactive with M. A low molecular weight coupling agent of similar type to RY 2 may also be present. Preferred copolymers are those formed from reactants in which A is a polymer of a vinyl aromatic compound and R is a polyester. In examples, AM 2 is disodium - poly - alphamethyl styrene, -polystyrene or polyisoprene, or dipotassiumpolystyrene, and RY 2 is the bischloroformate of polytetramethylene ether, polybutadienediol, polypropylene oxide terminated with polyethyleneoxide, polybutylene adipate, or of a polycarbonate trimer or polymer, or the tolueneisocyanato-terminated polyethylene-butylene adipate.
