Abstract

1,262,706. Polymerization process. BP CHEMICALS Ltd. 10 Sept., 1970 [20 Aug., 1969], No. 41507/69. Heading C3P. The polymerization of a vinyl or vinylidene monomer, particularly vinyl chloride, is effected in aqueous dispersion with a peroxydicarbonate formed in situ by mixing an organic haloformate with hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous alkaline medium which allows the pH to drop below 7. Preferably lime is used as the alkaline reagent so that the pH falls below 7 within half an hour of mixing the haloformate and hydrogen peroxide.
