Abstract
1,262,237. Assembling workpieces; breaking; jointing; shearing. AMP Inc. 7 Sept., 1970 [27 Oct., 1969], No. 42721/70. Headings B3A, B3E, B3J and B3W. In a method of severing a first workpiece 2, 124 from a carrier strip 16, 126 and assembling the severed first workpiece to a second workpiece, e.g. a printed circuit board 6 or tuning knob 131 respectively, the first workpiece is severed from the strip and is carried by a punch towards the second workpiece to assemble it thereto, the carrier strip being displaced laterally of its length to allow the punch to pass the strip. Assembling terminals on circuit boards.- When a terminal 2 is located immediately beneath a punch 52, the operator places the board 6 on an anvil 120. On actuation of a switch, a compressed air cylinder 66 lowers a slide 74 so that a portion 8 of the leading terminal enters a bore 56 in the punch. A piston-rod 86 of a cylinder 88 is retracted to move a block 92 thereby shearing the terminal from the carrier strip by the action of shear edges 93, 105. Continued movement of the block 92 overcomes springs 108 to move a block 100, the carrier strip being located in a passageway 106 defined between the two blocks. When openings 96, 98 are aligned with an opening 122 in an extension plate 30, a compressed air cylinder 62 is actuated to drive the punch 52 downwardly so that a portion 12 of the terminal enters a hole 4 in the board 6. A spring loaded plunger 114 enters the portion 12 to flare it outwardly and stake the terminal to the board. Meanwhile a compressed air cylinder 48 retracts a feed finger on an arm 42 and during the return movement of the parts of the apparatus, the arm is advanced to align the next terminal with the punch. Assembling split springs on tuning knobs.- The leading spring 124 is positioned under a punch 146 by a cylinder 48, the apparatus being a modification of that shown in Fig. 1, the carrier strip 126 being engaged in a notch 176 in a slide 172. A cylinder 66, Fig. 1, is actuated to drive the punch downwardly until a guide 164 enters the spring 124 and partially enters a recess 162 after engaging the slide 172. The cylinder 88 drives the slide so as to align openings 174, 179, 181. At the same time, the carrier strip 126 is flexed and bent by virtue of an inclined side 177 of the notch 176 so that the spring 124 is severed therefrom as a nose 182 on a slide 180 urges the strip against the inclined side 177. A cylinder 62 is then actuated to drive the punch further, so that the guide 164 enters the shank 130 of the knob 131. When a pin (160) engages a block 134, 136, it pivots a lever (150) clockwise, to depress a sleeve 148 relative to the punch 146 to move the severed spring 124 over the end of the shank 130, Fig. 14 (not shown). The parts are then returned to their initial positions and the strip 125 advanced for the next work cycle.
