Abstract

1,262,081. Bookbinding machines. BLAKENEY ENG. Ltd. 6 May, 1969 [17 April, 1968], No. 18136/68. Heading B6A. A machine for applying covers to "paperback books", assembled into book blocks B, Fig. 1, from a number of signatures, comprises a reciprocating feeding table 1 advancing the blocks B intermittently into the nip of a pair of toothed, endless conveyer belts 2, 3 which grip the sides of the blocks B and feed them successively past spine edge and spine adhesive applicators 7, 9 at which adhesive is applied to spine edges 8 and spines 10 for application to the end papers of a cover sheet 12 by an articulated, vertically reciprocable cover applicator plate 13 provided with lateral, hinged members which are applied against the spine edges 8. Following application of the cover sheet to the spine edges and spine the books are transferred by a reciprocating gripper device 14 to the nip of a pair of retractable, driven rollers 15 which feed the books downwardly such that a pair of applicator rollers 16 coats the remaining surfaces of the end papers with an adhesive whereupon a pair of consolidating rollers applies the "open" cover sheets 12 against the end papers of the blocks B. The feed table 1, conveyer belts 2, 3 and the gripper device 14 as well as the rollers 15 to 17 are driven intermittently and synchronously by a drive D, Fig. 4, comprising a cam 20 driven by a motor 19 and actuating a pair of cam followers 21 fast with a rack 22 which reciprocates a link 30 through the intermediary of a gear train 25 to 28, the latter gear meshing with a rack 29 on the link 30. The link 30 has its distal end attached to the gripper device 14 and proximal end provided with a rack 31 which meshes with a gear train 32 to move the conveyer belts 2, 3 uni-directionally and reciprocate the feed-table 1 through an associated belt drive.
