Abstract

1,262,068. Charging electrolytic furnaces; crust breakers. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. 23 Oct., 1970 [24 Oct., 1969], No. 50524/70. Heading F4B. A combined crust breaker and alumina feeder for an electrolytic furnace producing aluminium comprises crust breaking tools 75, a pair of alumina feeding tubes 54 associated with each tool and a leading and trailing scraper 113, 114 also associated with each tool, whereby the leading scraper removes loose alumina from in front of the advancing tool towards the cell side and the trailing scraper returns it. Each scraper blade 114 is pivotally mounted on an arm 116 and is resiliently held in the operative position by one or more return springs 117. The working path 132 of a scraper blade comprises a scraping movement to the point 131 through the alumina layer 28 in the crust 27, a lifting movement out of the alumina to point 133, a return movement to point 134 and a lowering to the starting point. The forward and return movements are obtained by a fluid motor 123 and the upward and downward movements by rocking a pivoted frame 126 by fluid motor 128. When not in use the scraper arm 116 may be swung upwardly by fluid motor 120 through a crank 122. The machine travels on a semi-portal crane 10, having two power driven carriages 12 on an elevated track 11, the other end being supported by a rubber tyred non- driven carriage running on the workshop floor 100.
