1,261,397. Composite tubular films. O-B RASMUSSEN. 8 April, 1969 [8 April, 1968; 10 April, 1968; 11 June, 1968; 18 Sept., 1968 (2)], No. 17930/69. Headings B5A and B5B. Composite tubular film is made by introducing an extrudable, polymeric, material and a second extrudable material into an annular chamber 10 to form a fluid sheet comprising interspersed layers of the materials, the sheet being subjected, while travelling through the chamber to the annular extrusion slot 11, to the action of combing means 12 which rotate relative to one another around the axis of the chamber, and which act on opposite sides of the sheet. The materials may enter via slots 6, 7 giving a lamellated sheet, or via annular slots (16, 17, 18; Fig. 6) giving a laminated sheet. The second material is preferably softer than the polymer and is suitably present in a higher proportion in a central annular zone of the chamber than in other zones. A further polymer may be supplied as an outer layer. The polymer may be H.D. polyethylene, syndiotactic or isotactic polypropylene or PVC. The second material may be L.D. polyethylene, copolyethylene-propylene or atactic polypropylene. The teeth of the combing means may project more or less than halfway through the annular sheet and may be inclined forwards with respect to their direction of rotation. They are desirably counter-rotated. Fibrillation of the extruded product may be effected, preferably following extrusion-orientation.
