Abstract

1,261,344. Acoustic inspection devices. ELECTRICITY COUNCIL. 27 Jan., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 9251/68. Heading H4D. A materials testing apparatus, e.g. for detecting decay in telegraph poles, comprises a vibrator 11 for applying vibrations through a probe 13 to the material, means for indicating the acceleration or amplitude of movement of the probe, and a spring 17 arranged to bias the probe rigidly against a stop until a predetermined pressure on the vibrator, applied towards the material, overcomes the spring bias so that the probe is then free to vibrate. Probe 13 slides in P.T.F.E. bearings 14, 18. The spring acts on a piezo-electric accelerometer 12 which, with collar 15 and bearing 18, limits the probe movement. The accelerometer output drives a meter 25 via amplifier 24. Decayed poles present a low mechanical impedance to the vibrations and so result in a high meter reading. The vibrator drive oscillator 26 and units 24, 25 may be disposed in a easing 22 having a pistol grip 21 and a dust seal 19. The accelerometer may be mechanically tuned, or the amplifier electrically tuned, to the vibrator frequency (e.g. in the range 40-80 Hz). The probe tip may be screwed or otherwise fixed to the material.
