[Also in Division G2] Colour couplers comprise compounds of the general formula wherein X is halogen, dialkylamino, alkoxy of 1-3 carbons or aryloxy; Y is H, halogen, CF 3 , CN, alkoxy, alkyl of less than 8 carbons, aryloxy, acyl, carbamyl, acylamino, sulphamyl, carboalkoxy or amino; R is alkyl of 1-5 carbons; -COR<SP>1</SP> is an acyl radical of 9-28 carbons and the radical Y is in the 3, 4 or 5 position of the anilide nucleus. In examples, compounds of the above formula where R is methyl, X is chloro or methoxy, COR<SP>1</SP> is a 2 : 4 - di - sec (or tert) amylphenoxy - acetyl or an α - (2 : 4 - di - tert - amylphenoxy) - butyryl radical and Y is hydrogen or a methyl, methoxy, CF 3 , N : N-diethyl-sulphamyl or pivaloylamido group in 5-position, are made by acylating with an acyl chloride R<SP>1</SP>COCl an amine having the above general formula but having an -NH 2 group in place of the -NHCOR<SP>1</SP> group shown. Amines of the latter type are made by reduction of the corresponding nitro compounds prepared by condensing 3 - nitro - 4 - methoxy - benzoylacetate ethyl ester with o-chloraniline, o-anisidine, 2 - chloro - 5 - trifluoromethylaniline, 2- chloro - 5 - pivaloyl - amidoaniline, 2 : 5 - dimethoxyaniline, 2 - methoxy - 5 - N,N - diethylsulphamylaniline and 2 - methoxy - 5- methylaniline respectively. 2 - Chloro - 5 - pivaloylamidoaniline is made by reducing the corresponding nitro compound made by reacting 4-chloro-3-nitroaniline with pivaloyl chloride.
