Abstract

[Also in Divisions B4 and B5] An extruder for rubber and plastics material providing improved heat transfer, e.g. 450k cal /sq. m./h./deg. C., comprises a cylindrical barrel 3 having, a cylindrical liner 2 which defines a helical passage 2a for forced circulation of cooling or heating fluid, and having therein a three start screw 1, the radial spacing s between the inner surface of the liner 2 and the crests of the threads 1a being equal at most to 0.2% of the barrel diameter D, and the radial distance a between the liner inner surface and the inner wall of the passage 2a being at most 15% of the barrel diameter D. It is stated that the three starts increase the heat transfer by providing increased disturbance of the film of material on the liner inner surface.
