Abstract
126,083. Maxted, E. B., and Ridsdale, G. R. Dec. 4, 1916. Catalytic processes and apparatus.-The catalytic oxidation of ammonia to nitric acid or nitrogen oxides is effected by arranging a constant supply of heat of suitable temperature at every point of contact between the gases and the catalyst, followed by cooling the reaction gases as soon as they leave the catalyst. The gases may be passed through iron tubes of small bore, or through iron tubes which have been flattened to the form of a hollow tape, or between iron plates in loose contact or a short distance apart, the tubes &c. being externally heated, for instance by a flame or electrically, to a red heat, and the time of contact being a fraction of a second. Nickel or cobalt, or according to the Provisional Specification copper or platinum, may be used instead of iron, and the inner surfaces of the tubes &c. may be activated in any known manner, for instance by treating with a solution of copper, tungsten, cerium, thorium, bismuth, or lead nitrate, or according to the Provisional Specification by coupling with copper or silver. The tubes may be enclosed in sleeves of silica, porcelain, &c.
