Abstract

1,260,839. Regenerated cellulose strips. COURTAULDS Ltd. 11 June, 1969 [6 May, 1968], No. 21320/68. Headings B5B and B5N. A strip comprises flat filaments of regenerated cellulose, e.g. viscose rayon, having a width to thickness ratio of at least 5 : 1, adhering to each other or to a substrate sheet, e.g. of wood pulp paper or regenerated cellulose film. The flat filaments extend along the length of the strip and may be straight or meandering and parallel or crossing one another. Interfilament contact is necessary in forming strips which consist of the filaments alone, the filaments adhering to each other by hydrogen bonding or by the addition of a size, e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or a methyl cellulose or hydroxyethyl cellulose. When the strip comprises a substrate sheet adhesion thereto of the filaments is by hydrogen bonding optionally assisted by a size. The flat filaments may be made by spinning an inflated filament of regenerated cellulose which is allowed to collapse to the flat filament. Dry flat filaments may be adhered to form a strip by wetting a collection of them with a swelling agent, e.g. water or aqueous sodium hydroxide, and compressing the collection. Alternatively a freshly coagulated tow of viscose rayon filaments may be spread to form a band, freed from surface moisture, led over a series of heated arcuate surfaces under tension so that the band is compressed and dried in the compressed condition. When the strip comprises a substrate sheet, the never-dried tow may be spread on a freshly laid, never-dried wood pulp paper sheet, the assembly then being compressed and dried. The strip may have a width of ¢ cm. to 1 m., the narrower strips being used as tying twines, and the wider strips as wrapping papers and wall papers in which the flat filaments provide the decorative effect and are laid on the substrate according to a predetermined pattern or randomly.
