Abstract

1,260,792. Regulating reactor cooling system. SIEMENS A.G. 23 Feb., 1970 [1 March, 1969], No. 8656/70. Heading B1X. [Also in Divisions G4, G6 and H1] A system for indicating when a liquid is boiling, and possibly supplying a control signal for a heater, comprises an inverted funnel 2 inserted in the liquid. As boiling commences bubbles are entrained causing an upward flow in the liquid, the funnel magnifies the flow velocities and causes fluid to gush out of the top of the funnel. The presence of the liquid is detected by the liquid (which may be molten metal), shorting out contacts 3 and energising a relay 32. In alternative embodiments the liquid sensor may comprise:- (1) A resistance thermometer which unbalances a bridge on being cooled by the liquid; (2) An orifice out of which gas flows and which is blocked by the liquid to produce a pressure change; (3) A pair of resistance wires arranged as the arms of a bridge, the wires detecting the level of the liquid by the amount of resistance not shorted out in the arms. In the pressure vessel 8 of a nuclear reactor (Fig. 5), detectors 7 are mounted above funnels 2 which dip into the coolant flowing around fuel channels 11. The detectors are connected to indicating device 73 which forms part of the regulating system for the reactor.
