Abstract

1,260,494. Bearing compositions; piston rings. DOW CORNING CORP. 25 April, 1969 [27 May, 1968], No. 21178/69. Headings F2A and F2T. A self-lubricating bearing or a piston ring comprises a dispersion of rigid lubricating granules in a bonding matrix of a flexible material chosen from an elastomer, a thermosetting resin, or a thermoplastic resin, the particle size of the granules being greater than 200 mesh and the flexible material constituting 15 to 35% by volume of the bearing or ring. The granules are preferably dispersions of lubricating material in a rigid binder, the lubricating material being chosen from graphite, PTFE, boron nitride, and sulphides, selenides and tellurides of molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, tantalum, zirconium, hafnium, niobium and thorium, the lubricating material constituting 25 to 97% by weight of the lubricant material and rigid binder. The granules may also include up to 50% by wt. finely divided particulate materials chosen from calcium fluoride, zinc oxide, zinc sulphide, potassium titanate, and antimony trioxide. The flexible material may have a fibrous reinforcing material embedded in it, and may also include lubricant particles smaller than 200 mesh in an amount not exceeding 50% by wt. of the flexible material.
